I didn't understand the importance of CT Vivian and John Lewis to our freedom as Black people until their death. The civil rights leaders who appeared in photos with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were valuable figures in the fight for social justice and equality. John Lewis is also known as "Good Trouble" died at age 80 on July 17, from pancreatic cancer. The same day as CT Vivian, who died from natural causes at the age of 95.
In January, Rep Lewis planned to attend the Martin Luther King Celebration. Reports stated Lewis was unable to attend due to his illness.
The civil rights leaders fought a great fight for many years and will be remembered for their activism. Lewis also co-wrote the book "March" which is a three-book series. I heard so many good things about this congressman in government.
Even though they both practiced non-violence, they were still beaten, arrested, and confronted. After years of standing up for the rights of blacks and demanding justice, they received the highest civilian honor from the nation's first Black president, Barack Obama.
