Tom Kane: The Voice Behind Yoda, Ackbar & Powerpuff Girls Has Died — A Legend Silenced

NEW YORK, In a city where voices shape culture as much as images and headlines, the passing of Tom Kane marks the end of an era in American pop storytelling. The legendary voice actor, known for bringing life to Yoda in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Professor Utonium in The Powerpuff Girls, and Admiral Ackbar in The Last Jedi, has died at the age of 64.

Kane passed away in a Kansas City hospital, surrounded by family, according to his representative. His death comes after complications linked to a stroke he suffered in 2020, an event that ultimately ended his decades-long career in voice acting.

For many in New York and across the U.S., Kane’s name may not immediately ring a bell. But his voice absolutely does. For nearly 50 years, he built one of the most versatile careers in entertainment, lending his unmistakable tone to everything from animated series and blockbuster films to video games and theme park attractions. He was part of the sonic backbone of franchises that defined generations.

His work in the Star Wars universe became especially iconic. As the voice of Yoda in The Clone Wars, Kane helped shape a version of the character that many fans grew up with, offering wisdom, warmth, and authority that stood alongside Frank Oz’s original portrayal. He also stepped into the role of Admiral Ackbar in later Star Wars films, continuing his quiet but essential presence in the galaxy far, far away.

Beyond Star Wars, Kane’s range was staggering. He voiced Professor Utonium and HIM in The Powerpuff Girls, contributed to Call of Duty, Marvel projects, and even served as a narrator for documentaries and promotional work. His career reflected a rare kind of vocal adaptability, able to shift from heroic to sinister, grounded to fantastical, often within the same project.

After his stroke in 2020, Kane retired from voice acting in 2021. In the years that followed, updates from his family revealed a difficult but steady journey of recovery, marked by resilience and support from fans and colleagues alike.

In a recent statement, his representative described him as more than a performer, calling him a devoted husband, father of nine, and a creative force whose work “shaped the childhoods and imaginations of millions.”

For New York audiences who grew up with Saturday morning cartoons, blockbuster premieres, and midnight game releases, Kane’s passing feels personal. His voice was everywhere, even when his name wasn’t.

And now, that voice belongs to memory.
