Tattoos Are a Sin: If Your Body Is a Temple of GOD, Why Deface It with Ink?

Close-up of tattoo artist working on a client's arm, illustrating the controversy over tattoos and Biblical teachings.
A tattoo artist inks a client’s skin, raising the question: Does body art honor God or defile His temple?

Tattoos are everywhere, celebrities, influencers, even regular folks showing off ink like it’s no big deal. For some, it’s "art" or "self-expression." But for Bible-believing Christians, the real question isn’t about trends, it’s about truth. What does God say about permanently marking the body He made?

Bible Baptists don’t follow culture; we follow the Book.

What the Bible Says About Ink

The King James Bible doesn’t sugarcoat it:

"Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD."Leviticus 19:28 (KJV)

It’s not a suggestion, it’s a straight-up command. Bible Baptists know our bodies aren’t for showing off rebellion or chasing fads; they’re temples, set apart for God.

Your Body Ain’t a Billboard, It’s God’s Temple

Paul makes it plain:

"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)

Bought by Christ’s blood that’s ownership, not a lease. So, how do we justify scribbling permanent graffiti on God’s property?

Tattoos Ain’t Just Ink, They’re Rooted in Rebellion

"It’s just a tattoo, lighten up." Yeah, history disagrees.

Tattooing comes from pagan worship, witchcraft, and marking the body for the dead. God told His people to stay clean and set apart, not tattooed up like the world.

As Pastor R. A. MacDonald puts it:

"The Bible’s crystal clear, no cuttings, no marks. God’s calling His people to be holy, not trendy."

Freedom or Excuse? You Decide

These days, folks twist "freedom in Christ" to cover compromise. But Bible Baptists call it like it is.

"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him."1 John 2:15 (KJV)

Tattoo culture? All about fitting in, not standing apart. God’s people are supposed to look different.

What’s Your Testimony Showing?

People look, and your appearance talks before you do. Tattoos confuse your witness, plain and simple.

"Abstain from all appearance of evil."1 Thessalonians 5:22 (KJV)

Even "good intentions" can give off the wrong message, and we’re called to be ambassadors for Christ, not billboard space for the world.

Already Inked? God’s Got Grace

A lot of folks come to Jesus after the ink’s done. God’s not out here condemning, but He is calling us to change.

Pastor MacDonald nails it:

"Know better? Do better. Got tattoos from the old life? Don’t glorify them, glorify Jesus who saved you."

Your past is your past; the future belongs to God.

Even Catholics Back This Up, That’s Saying Something

Bible Baptists trust the King James Bible, but it’s wild when even outside voices back the truth.

In the video attached, a Roman Catholic priest preaches against tattoos. Say what you will about doctrinal differences, even they see marking your body as defiling God's design.

We’re not the only ones saying it; this is bigger than Baptists:

"Ye shall not… print any marks upon you: I am the LORD" (Leviticus 19:28, KJV).

Bottom Line: God's Word or Culture, Pick One

Bible Baptists don’t sugarcoat:

  • Tattoos break God’s command, Leviticus 19:28.

  • Your body is God’s temple, not a canvas, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

  • Worldly trends gotta go, 1 John 2:15.

  • Your testimony matters, loud and clear.

Culture screams, "express yourself." God says, Express Christ. You can’t serve both.
