The Secret Origin of 'G.Dep' and the Song That Changed Everything
G. Dep: The Harlem Rapper Whose Name, Hit Song, and Dark Past Tell a Bigger Story
For New York hip-hop fans, the name G. Dep brings back memories of Harlem, Bad Boy Records, Black Rob, and the early 2000s. But behind the catchy records and Harlem Shake-era videos is one of the more complicated stories in New York rap.
Born Trevell Gerald Coleman, G. Dep grew up in Harlem and began building his reputation in the city's underground hip-hop scene. His stage name is generally understood to mean “Ghetto Dependent,” a name reflecting the environment and street culture that shaped his early life.
His career began with independent releases before a demo called “Dollar Bill” changed everything. As Coleman explains in the video featured with this article, Black Rob heard the song, liked what he heard, and eventually brought him into the Bad Boy orbit.
That connection led to Sean “Puffy” Combs, later known as Diddy, and in 1998, Coleman signed a reported five-album, $350,000 deal with Bad Boy Records. He appeared on Black Rob's Life Story and worked alongside some of the biggest names in New York rap.
His biggest moment came with the 2001 album Child of the Ghetto. The standout hit “Special Delivery” became his signature record, while “Let's Get It,” featuring P. Diddy and Black Rob, also became a major rap hit. “Let's Get It” and its video helped popularize the Harlem Shake dance craze of the early 2000s.
But G. Dep's promising career eventually collided with addiction and legal trouble. He struggled for years with PCP addiction and entered rehabilitation programs. In 2010, he shocked New York by walking into a Harlem police precinct and confessing to a 1993 shooting he had previously kept secret. He was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to life.
After more than a decade behind bars, New York Governor Kathy Hochul commuted his sentence, and G. Dep was released in April 2024.
Today, Coleman is back making music. His recent releases include Influential, Stay Ready and the 2026 album Off The Count, showing that his story as a New York rapper is far from finished.
