This isn’t science fiction. It happened in December 2021.


A flaw was discovered in something called Log4j—think of it as a digital notepad that countless apps and websites use to keep track of what’s happening behind the scenes. The problem? This “notepad” was sitting inside everything from your smartphone apps to hospital systems to government databases. And nobody saw it coming.


Security experts around the world scrambled. Companies held emergency meetings. The question everyone asked was simple: “How did we miss this?”


But here’s the uncomfortable truth: we were never going to catch it. And that’s not because security professionals aren’t smart enough or don’t work hard enough. It’s because we’ve been approaching digital safety the wrong way.



The Fortune Teller Problem


Think about weather forecasts. Meteorologists can predict tomorrow’s weather pretty accurately. They can give you a decent idea about next week. But ask them about the weather on a specific day six months from now? Impossible.


That’s not because they lack data or powerful computers. It’s because weather is what scientists call a “complex system”—too many moving parts, each affecting the others in unpredictable ways.


The digital world works the same way.


For years, companies have invested billions trying to predict cyber attacks before they happen. They hire teams of analysts, buy sophisticated software, and collect mountains of data—all trying to forecast where the next threat will come from, like digital fortune tellers.


The problem? They’re essentially trying to predict the weather six months out. Every single day.



Why Surprises Keep Happening


In 2020, hackers pulled off one of the most sophisticated attacks in history. They didn’t break down any doors or crack any passwords. Instead, they did something sneakier: they poisoned the well.


A company called SolarWinds makes software that thousands of organizations use to manage their computer networks—think of it as a trusted delivery service for digital updates. The hackers snuck into SolarWinds and hid malicious code inside their regular software updates. When companies installed what they thought were security improvements, they were actually inviting the hackers in.


Eighteen thousand organizations were affected. This included major corporations and government agencies.


Could this have been predicted? In theory, yes—security experts knew that attacking software suppliers was possible. But predicting this specific attack required imagining:


  • That someone would spend years planning a single operation

  • That they would target this particular company

  • That they would wait patiently, watching but not acting, to avoid detection

  • That thousands of customers wouldn’t notice anything wrong



The combinations are endless. It’s like trying to predict that someone will rob a specific house, on a specific date, using a specific method, years in advance.



Our Brains Betray Us


Here’s the thing about humans: we’re incredibly good at recognizing patterns we’ve seen before, and surprisingly bad at imagining new ones.


After a major ransomware attack hits hospitals, everyone rushes to protect hospitals. After a data breach exposes millions of credit cards, everyone focuses on payment systems. It’s like a neighborhood that installs better locks on front doors after a burglary, not realizing the next thief will come through the window.


Psychologists call this “fighting the last war.” We prepare for threats we’ve already experienced while staying blind to new ones.


This gets even trickier with artificial intelligence. As AI becomes more common—from chatbots that answer customer service questions to algorithms that help doctors diagnose diseases—we face threats that don’t fit any historical pattern. How do you predict a problem in technology that’s never existed before?



A Different Approach: Learning to Love Uncertainty


So if we can’t predict threats, are we doomed?


Not at all. We just need to stop trying to be fortune tellers and start being better learners.


Imagine two ways of living in earthquake country:


Option A: Build a house so strong that no earthquake could ever damage it. Spend all your resources predicting when the next quake will hit and exactly how strong it will be.


Option B: Build a house that can flex and sway with the shaking. Keep emergency supplies ready. Practice earthquake drills. Accept that quakes will happen, but prepare to handle them.


Option A sounds safer, but it’s actually more dangerous. Why? Because eventually, there will be an earthquake you didn’t predict. And when your perfect prediction fails, you have no backup plan.


Option B is what experts call “antifragile”—it doesn’t just survive shocks, it gets better from them. Each earthquake teaches you something new about how to respond.


Digital security needs more Option B thinking.



What This Looks Like in Practice


Let’s break down how this works in the real world:



1. Assume You’re Already Hacked


This sounds pessimistic, but it’s actually liberating. Instead of trying to build an impenetrable fortress (which doesn’t exist), assume someone is already inside and structure everything accordingly.


Major tech companies now operate with “zero trust”—even if you’re inside the network, you still have to prove who you are at every step. It’s like a museum where guards check your credentials in every room, not just at the entrance.


For regular people, this means: use different passwords for everything, enable two-factor authentication, and regularly check what apps have access to your data.



2. Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket


If everyone uses the same software, the same cloud service, or the same security system, one problem becomes everyone’s problem. It’s like an entire region planting only one crop—when a disease hits that crop, you get a famine.


Diversity is safety. Companies should use different systems that fail in different ways. If one gets compromised, the others keep working.


For individuals, this means not relying solely on one email provider, one cloud storage service, or one password manager.



3. Turn Every Problem into a Lesson


Traditional security works in slow cycles: a threat appears, security experts analyze it, a fix is developed, everyone updates their systems. By the time this happens, attackers have often moved on to something new.


Better systems learn in real-time. Every weird login attempt, every unusual pattern, every small glitch becomes data that helps the system understand what “normal” looks like—and what doesn’t.


Think of it like your body’s immune system. It doesn’t need to predict every possible disease. Instead, it constantly monitors for anything that doesn’t belong and learns from every encounter.



4. Keep Your Options Open


In uncertain situations, flexibility beats perfection. It’s better to have several decent plans you can switch between quickly than one “perfect” plan you’re locked into.


This means building systems where you can swap out components, change providers, or shift strategies without everything collapsing. It’s like keeping multiple routes in mind when driving—if traffic hits one road, you can quickly take another.



The Human Factor: Why People Matter Most


Here’s something that might surprise you: the most adaptable part of any security system isn’t the technology. It’s the people.


But here’s the paradox: the more we automate security decisions, the less practice humans get handling genuinely new situations. It’s like GPS navigation—convenient until you’re in an area with no signal and realize you’ve forgotten how to read a map.


To build truly adaptive organizations:


Question everything. The most valuable team member isn’t the person who follows the plan perfectly. It’s the person who asks, “What if our plan is wrong?”


Welcome different perspectives. People with different backgrounds see different problems. A team where everyone thinks alike might work smoothly, but they’ll all miss the same threats.


Practice failing. Fire drills aren’t just for kids. Companies should regularly run simulations designed to break their assumptions. The goal isn’t to succeed—it’s to discover what you don’t know.


Measure learning, not perfection. Instead of counting how many attacks you prevented, measure how much you learned from each incident and how quickly you adapted.

In your personal life:


  • Use a password manager and unique passwords for every account

  • Enable two-factor authentication everywhere possible

  • Don’t click links in unexpected emails, even if they look official

  • Regularly review which apps can access your data

In your workplace:


  • Encourage people to report suspicious activity without fear

  • Run regular training that goes beyond boring compliance videos

  • Create a culture where asking “dumb questions” is valued

  • Practice incident response before an actual incident



In your thinking:


  • Accept that perfect security doesn’t exist

  • Focus on how quickly you can recover, not just on prevention

  • Stay curious about new threats and technologies

  • Remember that convenience and security often require balance




The Real Lesson


The digital world is only getting more complex. AI systems are becoming more sophisticated. The Internet of Things is connecting everything from your refrigerator to your car to the electrical grid. Predicting every possible problem in this maze of connections is impossible.


But that’s okay.


The future of digital safety isn’t about having perfect foresight. It’s about building systems—and societies—that can learn quickly, adapt constantly, and bounce back stronger from inevitable surprises.


It’s about accepting uncertainty not as a problem to be solved, but as a reality to be managed.


The next major cyber incident will surprise us. That’s guaranteed. The question isn’t whether we can predict it—we can’t. The question is whether we’re building the kind of adaptive, learning-oriented systems and mindsets that can handle whatever comes next.


Because in an unpredictable world, the ability to learn fast beats the ability to predict perfectly. Every single time.
