Governor Gretchen Whitmer may avoid a partial government shutdown. Whitmer agreed to pass a budget without a long-term road funding plan. Previously, the Michigan governor stated she would not pass a bill without the road funding plan. If the budget is not settled by October 1st, a partial shutdown would ensue, effecting more than 48,000 state employees including state parks and secretary of state branch offices.
In December of 2018, a federal shutdown lasted 35 days. Leaving many workers without pay and struggling to feed their families. Reports of federal employees working odd jobs to pay bills and picking up food from pantries, dominated media headlines.
