Leonardo DiCaprio is not only a good actor, but also a great hymnist and benefactor. He recently announced that he will donate $ 5 million to rehabilitate and conserve the Amazon forests affected by the fires. His environmental charity Earth Alliance, co-founded with Laurene Powell Jobs and Brian Sheth in July 2019, will work directly with five local organizations including the Instituto Associacao Floresta Protegida (Kayapo), the Coordination of the Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB), the Instituto Kabu (Kayapo), the Instituto Raoni (Kayapo) and the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA). The primary goal of this collaboration is to protect the Amazon ecosystems, so the involvement of local indigenous communities is also needed to better distribute this financial assistance.
According to research, the number of fires so far this year is 72000, while in the whole of last 2018 there were about 40000 fires. Most fires are estimated to be the result of a large increase in massive surge in livestock operations and agribusiness, where fires are deliberately set up to clear space for development, though such practices have made the rest of the forest very vulnerable to fires. The Earth Alliance's goal is to protect and preserve forests from fire, support renewable energy and protect the rights of indigenous peoples.
