Another of the legends of television has passed away, unfortunately. The great Gabriel Mary known as "Gay" Byrne passed away on November 4th. This television giant, which has survived many television formats and remains what he is, is best known for its Late Late Show, which aired for some 37 years, from 1962 to 1999. A legend like this is not only an Irish legend, I would say in general. He was an incredible entertainer, but above and beyond that he pushed forward important social issues for wider debate, from abortion to divorce to sexuality. It's no exaggeration to say he played a major role in helping to shape modern Ireland. The television bard, which was buried today on November 8, should be honored by everyone.
