We only get 24 hours in a day. Sleep has to be apart of that 24 hours. I can honestly say I stayed awake for a whole 24 hours and it's not something I would do often. Our bodies need sleep. ( I found out the hard way.) After passing out from work or staying up to finish projects, I would think about 4-6 hours of sleep was enough. I was wrong. For adults, 7-8 hours of quality sleep is needed to function properly everyday. For teens, they would need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. School-aged children need 9 to 12 hours of sleep each night. Pre-schoolers need 10 and 13 hours of sleep including naps. Toddlers are required 11 and 14 hours of sleep including naps each night. Babies are required to sleep 12 and 16 hours a day including naps. So the younger you are the more sleep you need. However I do see elderly people require more sleep.
There are tons of benefits of getting quality sleep: don't get sick often, stay a healthy weight, lower the risk of serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease, reduce stress and improve your mood. Other benefits are you'll think more clearly, do better in school and work, and even get along better with people. Since you can think clearer, you make better decisions and avoid injuries.
